When “Free Shipping” No Longer Means Free: What the End of the $800 Minimis Rule Means for Our Coffee

Hey friends,

I want to talk about something important that’s changing how coffee gets from our farm in El Salvador to your cup in the U.S. It’s about tariffs, customs, and what it means for small orders.

What Changed?

Until August 29, 2025, the United States allowed many imports under $800 to enter duty-free under the de minimis exemption. But with new rules in place, that exemption is now gone — now, all imports (even small ones) are subject to tariffs, fees, and full customs processing.

So whether you're ordering a single bag or a bulk order, your shipment must go through full customs entry, meaning there are new costs and more paperwork on our side and yours. UPS DHL

How This Affects Our International Shipments

  1. Tariffs & Fees Now Apply to Every Shipment Even small orders of our coffee into the U.S. will now incur import tax, duty, and customs brokerage fees.
  2. More Stringent Documentation
Shipping carriers like DHL and UPS now require full commercial invoices, precise tariff (HS) codes, and the country of origin clearly listed.
  3. Longer Clearance Time Possible
Shipments may take extra time at customs as authorities review paperwork and collect duties.
  4. Carrier Notifications for Recipients
When your package arrives in the U.S., you’ll likely receive an email or SMS from the carrier (e.g. DHL, UPS) with steps on how to pay the import tax or fees for customs clearance before delivery.

What You’ll See: How the Process Works (for You)

When your coffee package lands in the U.S., you might get something like:

  • A message from DHL or UPS saying your shipment is awaiting customs handling
  • A link or portal to pay duties, taxes, and fees
  • An invoice showing those extra costs
  • Once paid, the carrier releases the package and delivers it to your door

This is a standard part of international shipping now, and the carrier acts as the intermediary collecting those fees on behalf of U.S. Customs. DHL UPS

What We’re Doing (and What You Can Do)

  • We’ll include clear cost estimates at checkout, so you’re not surprised
  • For large orders or wholesale, we’ll work together to optimize shipping and tariff strategies
  • We’re monitoring changes closely and adjusting so we can provide the best value possible

If you’re curious or want help understanding the extra costs for your orders—big or small—just send me a message or check out our Shipping & FAQ pages. I’m here to make sure your coffee journey is transparent, even when customs rules change.

Thank you for your continued support and trust.
